WTF, The video is blocked by the coke-snoring hooker-addicted media reproduction and artist extortion mob cartel! (Since I worked with those guys, I know that that is actually their exact and correct description. Seriously. You can’t even get a deal done without sex and drugs!
The maths? Looks like one potentiometer for each of the three motors and one PWM controller (potentiometer?) for the LEDs (strobes).
The nice morphing effects are the result of the camera shutter speed relative to the moving of the LEDs. This could have potential when using a microcontroller for motor and LED control… definitely WANT one of that!
As a board-certifed raver and club kid, I can verify this. I am currently stone cold sober and my face went into Happy-Andrea-Pass-Me-The-Vicks-Light-Show mode. Open mouth smile, eyes wise open, and leaning in close. Totally a natural reaction to seeing spiny flashy lights.
Now, if they had only picked a better track for the video instead of crap overplayed trance.
Legend of the Stone of Gelel.
Seven Color Rasengan.
Being performed by a freaking table.
If they ever make a Naruto movie without the cartoons, they need one of these.
unfortunately the physics behind it might make it tear itself apart if it was 10 feet across. plus the noise from the machine would be horrendously loud, but I’d still get it anyway too even if the physics didn’t work cuase i’d tinker with it.
Holy shit. I have friends that work on lighting design for some fairly well known artists. They would shit four times if that was a) 5 times bigger b) computer controlled (midi possibly) and c) available for purchase. Nice work my friend.
…probably also Tiësto’s management co’s that recalled the vid for using his Adagio remix . Sadly it’s all about the royalties these days… But brilliant light fx though!
Wow. 639 people have voted on this, and I think the 20 down thumbs were probably people who were people who clicked on the wrong one because they were dizzy or *cough cough* very dizzy.
Back in 2002, some Blue House type people from Seattle made one of these dual-stage scanning gyros, except that it was 12 *feet* in diameter! And of course at that scale there were many more pixels, in small RGB clusters, so it could render colors, not simply RGB stripes.
That version was a featured piece in the Cafe Keyhole at burning man. Oh yeah, and there was a mile-long laser going through the center of the gyro, a laser which also pierced the other major structures.
Ooh. Lava lamps for the 21st century.
Just to be picky – vid needs-
-starting off with slow demo of all the bits, overhead light on
-then gradually getting more complex, overhead lights off
-Pref less annoying music
*thump*
That? Oh, that was just my jaw hitting the floor. WIN. MOST EPIC THING SINCE LOLCATS. Oh my gosh, all I could do was stare. They should sell those, I’d buy one for sure!
This just looks so much like a McGuffin-O-Ultimate-Power from an 80′s sci-fi animated movie. I feel there should be some guy in a black cloak holding it up and screaming “Its mine, THE UNIVERSE IS MIIIIIIIIINE!!!”
… Pardon me, i didn’t read the posts so this might have already been suggested, but if you did this with yellow, cyan, and magenta lights, could you get a light spinning that creates darkness?
Sorry, CMY are subtractive primaries, and light sources are additive. That’s why you have to use additive primaries, or a reasonable variation thereof (RGB, RGBW, RGBA).
Pure win vo WMG and Kontor New Media….
“This video contains content from WMG and Kontor New Media. It is no lonver available in your country.”
Yes, i do (not!!!) like it to live in Germany
sucks for me2
even hidemyass won’t work anymore
yay works..whatever changed did i
yep, your right… f***in’ german laws…
Not available in your country… damn
Is this what they use to create light sabers?
I don’t care. I WANT ONE!!
No, silly, they use large amounts of light and energy focused through a special crystal.
Brilliant! I want one of those.
seconded.
I third it. O.O *stares*
Pure, unadulterated WIN….! One could take over worlds with that.
I’d pay good money for that little shiny object.
Cold fusion or warp drive?
Niether. This is obviously a Flux Capacitor.
Nope, its the new Flux Capacitor for the reboot/remake
Flux capacitor?
oh dear
@Hapqy: Look up the movie(s) “Back to the Future.”
We nerds hate that movie, there are too many flaws in the physics, so many that I cannot iterate them in wearing out the keyboard.
this is how they discovered the structure of the atom. and its a WIN!
Wait, wait. Are you tellin’ me this sucker is nuclear?!
They stole it from the Libyans.
the disco ball of the future. great for decorating
Get a whole bunch of those and hang em up over a dance floor, and you have one psychedelic experience.
True, but nobody will be danceing because they will be too busy staring at them.
If the Powerpuff Girls ever hosted a rave party, this is what it would look like.
No, really, it’s awesome. I sat here mesmerized during the entire video. What can I say? I like shiny, flashy things that spin. @.@
WTF, The video is blocked by the coke-snoring hooker-addicted media reproduction and artist extortion mob cartel! (Since I worked with those guys, I know that that is actually their exact and correct description. Seriously. You can’t even get a deal done without sex and drugs!
DO WANT! pure awesome
where can I get one? srsly
Wow. I never in my life thought I would hear a techno version of “Adagio for Strings.”
Tiësto – Adagio For Strings
I would love to see the maths behind this.
Holy cheese weasel! I hope the creator patents this design cause every raver in the country would buy one. Hell I would too.
I agree. Would rather have house music.
yes, before its idea gets copied
Imagine replacing the LEDs with a laser diodes and that effect would be shown on the walls. Like being IN the ball of light.
It’s the yarn ball that ceiling cat plays with.
Your comment is WIN trekkie47
Wow! To quote Will Smith ” I gotta get me one of these!”
Where can I get one???
@gash hotspotshield FTW
WOW!!! Scale that up a bit and you could probably use it to travel through time or something!!!
WANT!
Seconded!
How to keep a stoner occupied for years at a time FTW lol
stonerADD personwhere do I buy one? I’m totally serious. the magnitude of want for the shiny is nearing the danger level.
The most awesome thing I have ever seen. Ever.
Very cool. Wish I had the knowledge to build one of these. Nice adagio for strings in e minor mix as well. =^..^=
RASENGAN!!!
That’s what i was goin’ to say!
Legend of the Stone of Gelel.
Seven Color Rasengan.
Being performed by a freaking table.
If they ever make a Naruto movie without the cartoons, they need one of these.
That guy could make so much selling those….i want one 10 feet in diameter *drools over shiny spinning object*
unfortunately the physics behind it might make it tear itself apart if it was 10 feet across. plus the noise from the machine would be horrendously loud, but I’d still get it anyway too even if the physics didn’t work cuase i’d tinker with it.
Is this person related to Tesla?
If you obstruct the spinning with a stick, a fallout will commence.
Would not want to stick my finger in there.
Holy shit. I have friends that work on lighting design for some fairly well known artists. They would shit four times if that was a) 5 times bigger b) computer controlled (midi possibly) and c) available for purchase. Nice work my friend.
Did……..did I just travel through time?
God the programming for that must have been intense.
I think it’s manually controlled.
http://hackedgadgets.com/2010/04/20/spinning-rgb-led-ball/
Who would ever vote this awesome video thumbs-down???
Epileptics?
Nah. I don’t think this would effect epilepsy. It’s generally too solid a light. One of Senor Gif’s posts though… :/
Wow, I wonder how many times that came apart and put holes in a wall? crazy fun!
What’s the name of the song in this video?
William Orbit – Barber’s Adagio For Strings (Ferry Corsten Remix)
Adagio For Strings by William Orbit.
The song is “Adagio for Strings” by DJ Tiesto.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8lOB0my97SA
If you like this song, you should check out some his other work. He is a very talented mixer.
Want ! Schematics link please
…probably also Tiësto’s management co’s that recalled the vid for using his Adagio remix
. Sadly it’s all about the royalties these days… But brilliant light fx though!
Can we has instructables? Like, NOW?
I’ve got the concept of how it works, I’m just stumped for how the hell you wire it.
Nice mix of Homeworld theme. Best part of this vid.
I’ll bet that looking at it in person does more justice than the video camera.
Maximum warp!
In related news, why isn’t this in mass production yet?
Swirly
Wow. 639 people have voted on this, and I think the 20 down thumbs were probably people who were people who clicked on the wrong one because they were dizzy or *cough cough* very dizzy.
Figure out how to make a spinning pyramid and make it 15x larger, then we have Daft Punk’s new live show.
Want. o.o
OOOOOOOOOHHHHHHHH the light … It calls for me!
This is so little and cute!
Back in 2002, some Blue House type people from Seattle made one of these dual-stage scanning gyros, except that it was 12 *feet* in diameter! And of course at that scale there were many more pixels, in small RGB clusters, so it could render colors, not simply RGB stripes.

There is a photograph of the 7′ diameter *prototype* here:

Look familiar? (Sadly, I have not seen any photos of the big one at night.)
Ooh. Lava lamps for the 21st century.
Just to be picky – vid needs-

awesomeness.
daaamn. Sauron updated for modern times.
Put the plans online so we can build our own too! o_O
HOW CAN 30 PEOPLE NOT LIKE THIS?!!!!! THEY HAVE NO SOULS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Whoa…
Sorta psychedelic, don’tcha think?
WHERE CAN I GET ONE OF THESE?!?!?!
O_o Wow…….F***ing sick…..
NEED!!!!!
scotty i need warp speed in five minutes or were all dead
My only question is: “HOW MUCH?!?!”
That’s the most epic version of Barber’s Adagio for Strings I’ve ever heard…
Why did 34 persons give this a thumbs-down.
*thump*
The music got changed when i watched it again (it used to be Adagio for Strings) – anyone know the new one?
oh wait, i think i got it
Let me know if it’s not “Club Groovers – Warriors of Love”
I SAWS ME A BABY UNIVERSE IN THERE!! WITH THAT, I CAN RULE THE WORLD!!
Who needs the LHC when you have this? Hello Higgs boson!
I can’t see the win? Just different colours of light moving really fast.
And the techno music ruined it for sure.
It’s official. Humanity can now travel through time and create universes.
i need to clean my pants, i just shit a brick
New idea: Build a large version and use one of these for each LED. Repeat this for insanity.
if there was a scale of how much i want one of those it would be at a such a dangerous level -eyes widen and stares-
