I would imagine that in the breaks where the stop motion camera was not shooting, there was a projector overlaying the image for her or him. Or at least a rough draft of it. Not that it makes it any less impressive.
Very nicely done, and I’d love to know how the variations in shade with a Bic pen were accomplished.
Subject matter is trite and boring though. I think skulls as the primary subject of an image sort of appeal to pre-teen boys and stoners for the most part.
As an artist, bic pens are great for taking notes and doodling (during school). You have to have a very light touch to the paper to get the value correct. I think he drew the skull for its deep contrast of light and dark tones (but I don’t draw skulls because I am not mad at my parents for grounding me). Good job though.
The crown ruins the whole drawing. In reality, any dry-media artist can attain that level of quality with a bic pen. The only difference is the inability to erase.
Ball point pens actually have quite a bit of variation in darkness depending on how hard you press. It’s actually not a very uncommon sketching medium.
Give it a try with a bic, they really *are* about the only pens you can shade with. Thicker paper helps too, it has a bit of “give” that lets you get more variation more easily.
As an artist who could probably do this if I tried, I have to agree that the crown ruined it, and also that while it is impressive, actually doing it would have bored me out of my skull.
A) It isn’t unfeasable that most of this piece could have been done with one or two bic pens. Considering much of it is used in a very light layering affect, that doesn’t use as much ink as simply writing with it would. However I could be mistaken, and they probably did use multiple pens. So…
B) It is STOP MOTION. Do you really think he did that entire piece in one sitting? Do you really think he took no breaks? Do you really think he couldn’t have grabbed a new pen during one of the pauses in the stop motion animation?
I’m normally not a big skull person but daaannng that’s good. I loved the tulips but I agree, the crown didn’t fit as nicely in with all the other beautifully shaded stuff. Amazing drawing however, and created with pens makes it more awesome.
Yeah, I kept waiting for him to get back to that. Also, he could do some really intersting gradients between black and red using different applications of both pens. I wish I had a tenth of that talent, though.
I must be using the wrong sort of Bic pens, because the ones I use tend to skip now and again when I write (and I wouldn’t even dare to attempt to draw with them!). Ah well
Hate to sound like a hater here, but this feels like lowering the FTW bar… I mean, how is this any better than any video taken of any art being created in any medium?
I have to agree. How is it different from being able to sketch the exact same thing with pencil without erasing? Great talent I agree, but nothing extraordinary.
(Re: fingernails: Hey, they’re clean. Maybe he plays classical guitar too.)
Imagine doing something like that with the glop that comes out of Bics — in the corner of the big meeting room, with a serious expression on your face, while the boss is talking numbers.
The quality of the artwork is awesome. The music was outstanding. The video direction and editing are noteworthy. The one glaring problem: lack of knowledge of anatomy. Why does the spine seem to connect to the mandible instead of the base of the skull? The spine should be visible through the open mouth.
Is anyone else tired of the surge in popularity of Day of the Dead imagery?
The only artist who can kind of get away with it is Sylvia Ji, but even then, I want to punch every girl I know who says she’s her favorite artist (because paintings of pretty girls in Day of the Dead make-up is just not that impressive).
If I could draw like that, i would so rape Marvel. The crown isn’t that bad, just don’t look at it. And yeah, I’m studying anatomy and thats not how a spine connects to the skull.
that would make a pretty awesome tattoo (although I could do without the crown thing).
i was thinking the same thing
that was my first thought as well.
holy shit this is one of the awesomest drawing vids I`ve ever seen!
I’d be so pissed if I messed up on that.
O_O
Wow…
Now that’s talent!
I wish I could draw like that, without even planning it out beforehand in pencil or anything.
I would imagine that in the breaks where the stop motion camera was not shooting, there was a projector overlaying the image for her or him. Or at least a rough draft of it. Not that it makes it any less impressive.

Can he be my teacher?
A talented artist can create attractive and/or though-provoking artwork, using pens.
I can’t even draw a bloody BOX with a pen without screwing up. Sigh. Some people get all the artistic skill.
the crowny thing is SO ruining it :’(
Agreed. The roses and skull are excellent, but the crown looks tacky and out of place.
i agree. it was awesome until they added the crown.
Pretty much. Awesome skull, stupid crowny thing.
A simple skull is boring though.
Then I would rather have had it boring. The interesting part of this was the drawing technique, anyway.
i like the crown
it brings a bit of colour and softness to it, because a skull on its own is a bit foreboding.
There is a very light pencil guide. You can see it if you look closely.
The crown ruins the whole drawing. In reality, any dry-media artist can attain that level of quality with a bic pen. The only difference is the inability to erase.
Everyone’s a critic….
There never has been a statue built to honour a critic.
yeah so suck it Thenumbers
Hi anna!
How are they getting such a smooth shading effect from that pen? Are they rubbing it out of frame?
It’s the quality of the pen on a rough paper. Applying practice and the right pressure, you can create the transitioning grays pretty easily.
Draws one line wrong: FFFFFFFFFFFUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU
More like…
Draws one line wrong:
-Works it into the piece-
Somewhere DaVinci is smiling.

(Pun semi-intended.)
Just unbelieveble ‘-’
The Awesome part is definetly a copy of a projektion and the other Part ruins the pic. I don’t think it’s a win.
That’s not a Sugar Skull………THIS is a sugar skull

Sorry…….I was wrong……that is a sugar skull.
Technically, neither of your answers are correct. Sugar skulls are, by definition, made of sugar.
Anyone else see the title as “Big Penis Are Awesome” at first … ?
LOL
Great piece of art though … I am SO jealous of people who can draw …
Boyoboy is that guy talented. But could he please clip his fingernails. I mean, ew.
It’s because he plays a traditional guitar with nylon strings (He played the song in the video.) so his nails really need to be like that to play.
I contend that he uses finger picks to play. His nails are way too clean and smooth to be using for picking.
anybody know the song? Did the Artist create that too?
OMFG!!! I thouht I was good! This is freakin amazing!! But, no offence, the crown ruins it…. Sorry!!
I need a pen with that much ink… seriously
A) It isn’t unfeasable that most of this piece could have been done with one or two bic pens. Considering much of it is used in a very light layering affect, that doesn’t use as much ink as simply writing with it would. However I could be mistaken, and they probably did use multiple pens. So…

Awesome talent, not big into the subject matter.
Damn, this is really good. I wish I could shade that well.
Skull Rider: A lighter look at life.
I’m normally not a big skull person but daaannng that’s good. I loved the tulips but I agree, the crown didn’t fit as nicely in with all the other beautifully shaded stuff. Amazing drawing however, and created with pens makes it more awesome.
I know this is awesome and all, but isn’t the neck connected to the skull, not the jaw?
Yeah, I kept waiting for him to get back to that. Also, he could do some really intersting gradients between black and red using different applications of both pens. I wish I had a tenth of that talent, though.
Yeah… that was weird.
Wow, that is sooooo amazing. Beautiful Day of the Dead artwork. I would have paid for that.
I must be using the wrong sort of Bic pens, because the ones I use tend to skip now and again when I write (and I wouldn’t even dare to attempt to draw with them!). Ah well

That is awesome, albeit in a creepy sort of way.
Luke… lol .. yah… neck bones connected to the………. chin bone? anyways… im a tattoo artist… and this makes me jealous… =(
Its just me or the artist holds the pen in a strange way?
This is Chuck Norris drawing in real time! xD
no, no more chuck norris references they are starting to piss me off

This is god damned incredible. What’s the music?
Also, I have to be ‘this person’
This isn’t stop motion, it’s Time Lapse

He has got a talent. O_O
It’s awesome, except for the “crown” on top; that looks like crap.
wish i could draw that well, it makes my art look terrible
If this doesn’t get him a job at Bic, nothing will
