I’m so happy to see this, and I hope this kind of prosthetic can be made available to all the people who need them. Also, I rather prefer to see the mechanism instead of the slightly creepy latex skins so many prostetheses have. I’d probably want a glow-in-the dark one.
HELL YES ROBOTIC HANDS ARE FINALLY HERE!
I’m tempted to cut off my hand now. And personally, if I had one, I wouldn’t want any kind of skin or covering over it at all — I’d want the parts and circuitry showing. That would be so awesome.
Boo. So what? That’s been millions of years ago, it’s no news anymore.
Plus, putting God in play is not exactly a fair comparison, obviously God can do better. But I still find it pretty cool that MANKIND got to make such a cool device.
Very cool. I always wanted to get into this field. Already designed some stuff with that Nitinol wire (shrinks when you apply a current, acts just like muscle).
If I remember correctly, this is called the i-Limb. To be able to move all the fingers, I think the arm has to have been amputated below the elbow. And the skin covering is necessary to be able to grip properly, but they’ve had so many requests (mostly from soldiers) to take it off because of the cool-looking mechanics that you can get it with a clear covering.
funny that all the main news websites have this overblown coverage for the “bionic kitteh” with 2 prosthetic paws when in reality theyre just inch metal pieces sticking out of its nubs, yet no one is reporting about this??? this blew my mind, thank you epicwinftw.
The key there would be the “sticking out of its nubs” part—prosthetic body parts have tended to be either fully internal (i.e. artificial hip joints) or fully external (standard prosthesis). There have been significant roadblocks to creating a limb replacement that could be connected to the bone, or interface directly with muscles or nerves to develop prosthetics that effectively replace the original limb in terms of actual motor function, because it involves breaching the skin barrier permanantly, and that brings up problems with infection and pain and healing. The cat’s prosthetic legs copied some feature of the way antlers grow through the skin of a deer, to make it viable for the prosthesis to go through the skin, which is a huge breakthrough.
That’s so awesome. My dad had one arm but hardly ever wore his prosthetic because it was heavy and basically useless. The fingers were bendable so he could carry things like light bags but that was about it. It was hard to even lift his arm with the prosthetic on.
Everything that’s wrong with America today is George W. Moron’s fault. He had 8 years in office and what did he do with it? Make war on Iraq, spend a crap load of money that wasn’t his on stuff we didn’t need, and that we’ll be paying for for the next sixteen bazillion years, and just generally let Corporate America rob us blind. Also, he and gave all his rich buddies billions of dollars a day in no-bid contracts, all the while driving the world economy straight into the ground. And for all that, he never did find those imaginary weapons of mass destruction he told us he was sure Sadam Husein had. Oh, and HE’S NOT THE PRESIDENT ANYMORE!!! Stop calling him that! Didn’t you get the memo?
…
A crazy psycho from the other side of the spectrum. And you don’t even mention one of the worst things that he actually did: He proclaim a group of people forced into violence terrorists, thus assisting in their destruction, which has now resulted in a mass genocide in Sri Lanka.
Oh, and the title President is retained after you leave office, like professor. It an honorific, I guess.
please be honest – you’re what, sixteen? seventeen? way to mindlessly parrot every talking point msnbc vomits in your general direction. we have characters like you to thank for electing the only person who could possibly do an even WORSE job than dubya. gratz.
Can they make the coverings out of more metal instead so it doesn’t look freakish and corpse-like?
And better yet, can they style the external shape so that it looks like a Transformer’s arm? If I needed a prosthetic I’d want that arm to look like Optimus Prime’s from the new movies.
You know, that’s probably a DARPA invention. My dad works for them, and he talks about that kind of stuff all the time. It’s incredible the things we come up with!
FINALLY!! I’ve been waiting years for my bionic arm dream to come true!
Now where’s that hack saw…
Was his hand cut off by Darth Vader?
Luke i am your less hairy brother
DDDD
Freaking cool, now this guy can open up his beer on his own!
Yeah, because he could of never of done it with his right hand.
Could of?
“Could have never”*
actually it’s never could have
*never could have opened it*…just sayin
English triumphs once again.
Skeletor rejoices as he grasps the first can with He-Man’s recently “donated” arm.
To quote another metal-handed man: “Groovy.”
A whole new kind of epic.
This one’s sexier.

and if that one’s fully functional as well, then my mind is actually blown!
That thing’s operational!
Wich thing? the black one or the blonde one?
Now witness the firepower of this fully ARMED and operational battle station!
Title fail. That’s not science, that’s technology.
Technology is applied science.
You fail. Technology is science.
Technology is developed by science.
Science is developed by technology.
And recursion is developed by recursion.

penis
All the guys above me just fed you.
Awesome! The geek in me is reminded of Luke’s new hand in Star Wars.
This begs for there to be video of it! Is there video of this anywhere?
I’m so happy to see this, and I hope this kind of prosthetic can be made available to all the people who need them. Also, I rather prefer to see the mechanism instead of the slightly creepy latex skins so many prostetheses have. I’d probably want a glow-in-the dark one.
Tragically, one week later he was in a serious motorcycle accident.
The hand was not recovered.
1:38 – “let’s film this guy inputting his PIN number so we can show how dextrous his new hand is!”
of course it won’t be much use without his card, but it can’t exactly be difficult to track down some guy with an amazing bionic hand.
Really? You pick a guy to mug and you pick the cyborg?
This one is better, created by Dean Kamen

If he gave himself a handy would it fell like himself or someone esle doing it?
Very cool, but I’d never cut off my hand. lol They’re not quite up to piano playing functionality yet. XD
Finally! I’ll be like my dad!
Now they need one for fingers only, cause I still got my hand and my thumb, nothing else. MAKE IT HAPPEN!
Same company makes partial hands. I’ve even seen one that was for someone in the same condition you describe. I think they call it ProDigits.
I think it’s more amazing that our Creator made the other, real hand and it can do so much more.
Boo. So what? That’s been millions of years ago, it’s no news anymore.
Plus, putting God in play is not exactly a fair comparison, obviously God can do better. But I still find it pretty cool that MANKIND got to make such a cool device.
Our Creator had a bit of a head start. Just give humanity some time to catch up, and do better.
That ol’ thing?
Just wait until to 2021 line of robot hands comes out. It’ll leave our Creator in the fucking dust.
He’ll be like “Dur-hur-hur I made hand.” and we’ll be all “Oh really, check this shit out *bam*, superhand!”
We are the Borg. You have been assimilated.
One word: WIN.
Umm… these have been around for some time. So it was like Epic Win 20 years ago…
So what’s cutting edge in the world of robot hands?
As I write this, there are four Thumbs-Down votes. Why the hell would anybody vote that way?
Creationists. That’s why.
Not us. Probably the people like Flo up there that are saying its old news.
Very cool. I always wanted to get into this field. Already designed some stuff with that Nitinol wire (shrinks when you apply a current, acts just like muscle).
Glad to see this coming about.

Website of the people to make it: http://www.touchbionics.com/i-LIMB
Want it. In chrome. Preferably with circuitry visible in parts. Line me up for the amputation!

Problem is this video has probably been around for some years already.

Also, it’s adorable.

Well, that’s great. If you have a mountain of cash laying around and you need a limb replacement , you’re all set.
The rest of us, however, remain screwed. Thank You George W. Moron.
Wow, how is this the president’s fault? I don’t get it.
Everything that’s wrong with America today is George W. Moron’s fault. He had 8 years in office and what did he do with it? Cheer up! Maybe there are limb replacement scholarships.
ex presidents keep the title ‘president’….
He did those things, but that doesn’t mean everything is his fault. Stop blaming everything on him.

covering it in metal probably wouldn’t make it very flexible….
Those fingers look like they glow in the dark. This would be handy not only for finding your way around in the dark but also for bionic rave parties.
Now, if it only came in metal, then we’d really be cooking.
It does. There’s an aluminum chassis. http://www.touchbionics.com/Pulse
My roommate (Dale Herzog) just won a design competition for designing a testbed artificial hand that could be printed out on a 3-d printer: http://finance.yahoo.com/news/Winners-Announced-in-bw-401463732.html?x=0&.v=1
Automail anyone?
…is the exact comment I was going to leave. Epic, Sir!
Oooooh *o* It DOES look nice, doesn’t it?
You know, that’s probably a DARPA invention. My dad works for them, and he talks about that kind of stuff all the time. It’s incredible the things we come up with!
Skynet is just around he corner…
full metal alchemist anybody?
Do they install retractable blades as well?
